Bathroom

Toilet Paper

It's easy to pull the toilet roll with a strong pull and use up more paper than you actually need.  Here's a small tip. Before putting the roll in the holder, squeeze it until the cardboard circle in the middle is flat.  This will make the roll go slower and you will automatically use less! ;)

Detergents

Beat the temptation of just opening the detergent and pouring it directly into the washing machine compartment.  Use the doser provided with the detergent, usually it's the same cap in liquid detergents.  Powder detergents many times do not have one.  Just get yourself a plastic cup and place it next to the detergents.  Apart from saving up on detergent, you will also be helping the environment!

Cold Water

It's proven coloured clothes look better when washed with cold water.  So save yourself the money wasted on electricity bills when the washing machine heater is automatically turned on and set the temperature to cold before you push the Start button.

If you really don't like the idea of washing with cold water, decrease the temperature, it will help you save anyway.

Water Heater

I have discovered that if I switch on the water heater for just 2 hours a day, I have enough hot water for the rest of the day - both for my dishes as well as my showers.  I switch it on every evening while I have dinner on my sofa and watch TV then turn it off before I go to bed.  If you are forgetful and don't want the risk of not finding any hot water, you can buy a timer from any home or hardware store which will do it automatically for you.
