After the wedding is over and the hot steamy honey moon is almost done, you will have to pause and think about the people who showed up to your wedding day.
'Mommy, I don’t like veggies!' How many times have we heard this? Well, this is the end of it. Here are my tips to making soup eating fun and colourful. You’ll be surprised at the outcome.
My nephew was over for the weekend, and as much as I love him, I was dreading meal times. You never seem to get it right with kids unless you give them ready made chicken nuggets or anything fried with lots of ketchup on.
So one evening we’re sitting at the table and I ask the usual question, “What do you want to eat honey?”
“Fries and ketchup”, he answered in the blink of an eye.
He had had hot dogs on Friday evening, chicken nuggets for Saturday lunch and now he wanted fries for dinner, he can’t have fries again, I thought to myself, otherwise I’ll feel as if I am the ambassador for obesity. So I’m staring at him when I get this brilliant idea, “What about red soup with crunchies on top?”
He looked at me blankly but couldn’t hide his curiosity. “What’s in it?”, he asked.
“Well”, I said with a big grin on my face, “it’s a secret but I’ll let you have some if you promise you’ll be a good boy all weekend.” There, I turned it into a treat :)
I had made a massive pot of tomato soup the week before, so I had liquidized it and frozen a few portions for me to just stick in the microwave on a quick lunch break.
So I take out two portions for me and the little one. I made him look at them, “See how they are in the shape of a box?” I asked him, “I’ll put them in the microwave and we’ll have some lovely soup in 5 minutes!”
Sure enough 5 minutes later he’s at the table eyes full of curiosity, when the microwave bell rings. ”Aunty! Red soup is ready!” he exclaims.
My sister wouldn’t believe it when I later told her that her son had actually eaten soup, let alone tomato soup. “But he’ll never even smell tomatoes, he hates them”, she said.
“I know”, I said, “but see, this wasn’t tomato soup. This was Red soup!” She just couldn’t help but laugh.
From then on, anytime he’s over, my nephew keeps asking me for Green Soup (pea soup), Orange Soup (pumpin soup) or even Purple soup (beetroot soup).
Just sprinkle some croutons on top and kids will crunch their way through the soup before you know it.
